Photography to me holds a significant power to help others. This time, The Boys and Girls Club of Green Bay. These are the start of a new little project that I will be working on with a friend at the club. The thought behind this is to show that The Boys and Girls Club is not just a place where kids hang out, it’s a place that helps school age youth make better choices and reach their full potential in a safe and accepting environment. It teaches all young people, regardless of background or circumstances to be equipped to respect others and make our community a better place to live.

Did you know that they are currently serving over 8,300 children in the Green Bay community!

It’s not only a place to just hang out, it’s a place to build friendships, a place to learn technology, explore different mediums of art, learn how to play an instrument, develop self-discipline and leadership sills, gain the trust of others and develop lasting lifelong skills.

I had that opportunity to make a few pictures of Kareem in the weight room. Pretty big and intimidating guy. It’s not always easy asking a guy of his stature if I can take a few pictures of him. Kareem gave me the OK and away we went.

Did some really tough photos of him lifting and expressionless, but at the end we all had really good time and I managed to capture a shot that shows Kareem’s real personality.

A few weeks ago I get a call from my friend Ben who I have not heard from in a few weeks. After a short conversation of catching-up, he told me about this group of people that were building an igloo in their back yard and going for a new Guinness World Record™. My response, “That’s pretty cool.”

One week went by and the “Bigloo” was still under construction and my schedule was so that I wasn’t able to make it over to shoot, but I was more excited to shoot this thing in it’s final completion. Fast forward another week and a couple light snowfalls later, and the phone rings again.

Racing the sunlight, a race that we photographers always seem to be losing, I get over there and set up the tri-pod, throw on the  wide-angle and start locking in my exposure with the sun fading fast. These new high-iso digital cameras sure are amazing. I was able to pull-in a lot more of the sky, even after the sun was completely down.

One of my first thoughts was, how the hell does one light an igloo!? I have lit my share of “subjects” in my photography career, but I have never lit an igloo. Standard light on the outside just was not going to cut it for my taste. With all that white snow and sun dropping fast there was no way that I had the time to control all the light bouncing around out there. I ended up sticking lights on the inside of the Bigloo and lighting from within, to get a glowing effect as if there were a temple on the inside, Raiders of the Lost Ark style when they remove the top of the Ark.

The world’s largest igloo is now sitting in Green Bay after more than two months of difficult team work by a group of prospective record-setters.

“I think we were all really relieved,” says group leader Paul Steckart. “We broke out some champagne, had a couple drinks and kind of just sat there and stared at it.”

The current world record was set in Canada by a group of engineers in 2008. Their igloo came in at 25 ft 9 in across and 13 ft 8 in tall. The so called Bigloo that Steckart’s group has built in Green Bay registers in at approximately 27 feet across and 17 feet tall. ”It’s been 9 weeks since we started on it.” Throughout that time they have received all the proper paperwork from Guinness and just need to get all their documented information in order. The next and final step – they will have the Bigloo officially measured Monday.
“We’re going to have it on camera through one of our local TV stations. We’ll have a notary and a witness.” explains Steckart.

“Once we have it all together for Guinness we’ll send it in and they’ll verify all the information and we’ll be on our way to the Guinness Book of World Records™.”

Big thanks to Ben for helping me and standing on the inside of the Bigloo tripping my flashes and helping with the set-up and tear-down, taking a few behind the scenes shots and tipping me off to the Bigloo!

While deciding on what coffee shop to read today’s RSS feeds, a few questions came to mind that seems to make one coffee shop stand out more than others. Wi-Fi (of course), Good Coffee, and Outlets. Of course, this is subjective, and I know for a fact that my daily morning coffee pick-up only includes the “Good Coffee” part and stop at my local coffee roster, Luna Cafe.

Since August 2000, Luna Coffee and its owners, Angela and Mark Patel, have been serving fresh-roasted coffee in De Pere, Wisconsin. Our cafe’, once a turn-of-the-century horse harness maker’s shop, offers a cozy atmosphere that celebrates both the history of our building, with hardwood floors and exposed brick walls, and the vibrant arts scene of today, as we display artwork of some of the area’s best photographers, painters, and other artists. -lunacafe.com

Among other coffee shops in the Green Bay area are, Karvana, The Daily Buzz, Crystal Coffee Cafe, Starbucks (of course, they’re everywhere), Caffe’ Espresso, Lox Stock & Bagel and many more. But when I am in other cities, I have been making myself aware of what I look for and it is Free Wi-Fi, Good tasting coffee and plenty of power outlets for all.

I feel bad saying this, but there is rarely that I don’t visit a coffee house without my MacBook Pro. There used to be a day that I could just take a book and spend the day reading, but those days have slowly dwindled down to only a few.
Feel free to leave your own reason as to what you look for in a coffee house.

Being the Easter season, I have a few confessions that I have to admit to. Things have been pretty busy and I have buckets of CF cards waiting to be shared with everyone. The first thing that I would like to confess to is that recently I have made a Fine Art push with some of my work. Not quite the size and stature of Chase Jarvis’ last gallery show of his New Zealand landscapes that was recently on display in Dubai, but none the less it feel really great to have my work on display for the locals.

The most recent of my displays is at a local Coffee house, Luna Cafe in De Pere, WI. This group of work went up on March 14th and will continue to be on display for another month or 365 days, display time has been agreed upon the amount of feedback that has been received. So far so good.

Another place where I have work on display is at Jeremy Brown’s Montagues Wine Bar and Cafe, also located in De Pere WI. This series of work is of another subject matter than the work at Luna, and is more than likely to move you in one manor or another. I highly encourage all of you to swing by both places (they are only a bridge apart) and check’em out!

As for assignments, I recently shot a Todd Snider concert at the Riverside Ballroom in Green Bay WI. This barefoot troubadour performed live on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Late Night with David Letterman and his CDs appeared on numerous year-end Top 10 lists including Spin, Blender and Rolling Stone.

I’ll have another post to follow with some more pics of things that I have been up to, but for those of you that have made it this far. Here’s one for the road:
